We had issues with autofs, but the symptoms were different (and that one was fixed), cf. http://bugs.gluster.com/cgi-bin/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=220 However, it turns out from that report that autofs spawns multiple glusterfs processes -- this might be related to your issue too.
