I found my issue:
in 3.4.2 there is a bug here
https://github.com/gluster/glusterfs/blob/v3.4.2/extras/init.d/glusterd-Redhat.in#L75

and this is fixed in http://review.gluster.org/#/c/5074/

I will backport this change.
