Thanks for the suggestion. I can't read the email address, even after 
entering the captcha's, I still get a hyphen truncating part of the 
address, but I'm guessing it goes something like gmail and then hyphen and 
then support and then the at symbol etc.

Just to let everyone know, I tried again now, and the same "Schrödinger's 
cat" problem is happening. The username BOTH exists and doesn't exist.

And I tried with a dot and without a dot, and with the old, googlemail.com, 
and with the newer gmail.com. When I try to retrieve the password, there is 
no such user. When I try to create a new account, that username already 
exists.

Ok, I'll try to get gmail support to help. I think I already did, but I'll 
try again and report back.
