What you described can happen if duplicates of those emails arrived again. Gmail would recognize them as duplicates and so keep only one copy, but it would mark it as unread again and/or in your Inbox instead of the Trash. Today (Thursday) I am finding that email is acting funny. I am seeing strange delays (12 hours or more) and many messages are arriving in the wrong order, e.g., replies arriving before the emails they are replies to. It may be that the 'net as a whole is having a bad day today and email delivery is globally affected.
