Yup.  All you need to know is one of these two hidden codes, and then the
hidden fields will be revealed to you, yup.  Nah, no secret at all.
 Riiiight.

Why not make it visible from the start?  Why make it hard to figure out how
to do simple tasks?

You can tell me all you want how there was nothing to figure out because
you "simply click" where there is nothing hinting you should click there,
or simply press Shift-Tab; but the fact is that you needed to know that in
advance.  It was in effect a "secret handshake", that you knew about, and I
had to figure out, but it prevented at least one person from accomplishing
his task, until he asked for help.
