What Marco said has always been the case for myself as well, whether on my
phone or my desktop, read messages have always appeared as closed... tabs,
I guess, while unread messages are open, with the focus on the oldest
unread message and the newer messages expanded underneath.

If you use several devices (phone, tablet, computer) all the changes are
synced locally on Googles end, so if you read two messages in a
conversation on your phone, and three more messages come in and you open
Gmail on your pc, those first two messages you read will be "tabbed" shut,
and the newest three messages will be open, with focus on the third
message.

As far as the snippets go, I believe that the main, or original message in
the conversation is displayed until a set number of messages are in the
conversation. I just opened another thread from this group that had five
messages, and the snippet displayed the original message. When I went box
to my inbox however, the fifth messages snippet was displayed, while in
this conversation your snippet was displayed IvyNut, and not Marcos, even
though I have already read both of these messages. Will experiment more and
see what I can find out.

Cheers
