I cannot comment on the stability of Gmail's POP3 service as I never use
it. I have no problems reading email using my iPhone and Thunderbird via
IMAP.
May I ask why you are not using IMAP instead? You have also not mentioned
what client you are using, perhaps the problem lies there?
