The age of your computer shouldn't matter.  All the emails are stored on
Gmail's servers.

A few things that might help:

You can construct a "Filter" that processes all new emails received during
your absence.  The filter could either (A) Archive all new messages and
give them a unique Label, so that you can go back and check them later when
you have time, or it could (B) Delete all new messages until you return.  I
would advise not to do (B) because some of those messages might actually be
important.  Gmail has 15 Gigabytes of storage space so there is little
problem keeping them around, just in case.

Be careful about using a Vacation Responder, because it lets people know
you are not home.
