I think it must be the latter. The situations I kept seeing involved a thread I never participated in, and none of the messages were directly addressed to me. It is a maillist I am subscribed do, as a "read-only" member so far, and that particular thread was of no interest to me. Every new message yesterday made it re-appear in my Inbox, with "Muted" on the Subject line in the message list. Every time, I would re-mute it, but then the next message would un-mute it, but leave it tagged as "Muted". I do use "mute" occasionally and have not had this problem before, so I wondered if I was seeing a bug or if it just doesn't work the way I thought it should.
