Zack - I can't speak for Bob's version of Gmail, or yours, but my Android (Gmail app) version does not have the icon described in your link. In my version, there's no way to "unread" a Gmail. The only choice are Archive and Delete. I just leave them all in place and "unread" them the next time I'm at the actual computer.
