Your web browser's Print function (which is I think what you first tried using) is intended to print a snapshot of the browser's screen, and that is essentially what you got, except that much of the content you wanted to see was too far off the right edge of the printed page. But what you wanted was to print only the message or messages, not the screen. There are some websites that trap the web browser's attempt to print the screen, and turn it into a modified print of only a portion of the screen. Gmail doesn't do that. Instead, it has those two special functions (a pop-up menu item and an icon) for printing a message or a thread of messages.
