so, it would appear that without a custom implementation that supports 
google's X-GM-LABELS IMAP extension, no client will function correctly 
while using IMAP folders.

the client must support the X-GM-LABELS extension, since there is no method 
to disable this 'feature' in the gmail interface.

i'd like some explanation from google as to when this issue will be 
rectified. currently, the only alternative is to switch to a proper IMAP 
provider, or use google apps sync / outlook EAS with outlook.com...

yes, this is yet another case of how google broke the internet.
