Are you using Lion mail? Cause I just read an article online that says this new folder is a "normal" function of Lion mail, and you have to go through a few steps to turn this off. Thunderbird also has a similar option, but if you follow the Google Help page for how to set up IMAP, I've never had this happen to me.
