I recall having a similar problem when using OperaMail on Win7 a couple of years back. Something about the email-client needed an extra security item to log in.
A web search found that I needed a supplementary password to be generated by gmail in a browser. Shouldn't be hard to find again if you can paste the exact error message into your search bar.
