I have also just started experiencing this problem in the last few weeks. 
 I do this all the time (reply to a thread when I was the last person to 
contribute), and in the past Gmail always sent the mail to whomever else 
was in thread, not to myself.  Now, if I was the last person to contribute 
to a conversation and I hit reply (as a follow up or because I forgot 
something, etc.) it replies ONLY to me.  This has caused some fairly 
uncomfortable problems in which I was supposed to follow up with someone, 
thought I did, but didn't realize until they nagged me that I actually only 
replied to myself.  Awkward.  :(
