I just found a trick for this. Copy one word of larger text from another email and paste it into your email. Then add your text mid word. Delete both parts of the original word when done. This is quite a pain but it works. This way, in a reply, you can also match the font size used by the sender. That's the polite thing to do. Google should be ashamed of themselves for omitting a font size feature.
