You can also just allow www.google.com as an exception: Options | Settings -> Privacy | Cookies | Exceptions -> Website address: www.google.com, press Allow. (My Firefox is Danish, so maybe the exact English words are slightly different).
Then you can still block 3rd party cookies. :o) I just had the same problem, and adding this exception this solved it nicely.
