I am with you on this, and I think you might find this is what you are

Once you install it, just move everything around to your liking.

Pretty sure that's what your talking about, but I could be totally
wrong. Also, even if you don't want to install the extension, just
look under customize (right click menu bar) and there are gmark icons
you can drag up there. In other words, what you want is already
available.
