Actually, yes I use that extension and I do see that error in the
console. Damn, I hadn't checked the console until now - thanks,
Dmitry. Disabling the extension makes it work again. Apologies to John
for not realising it was an extension compatibility issue. :)

According to https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere/rulesets it seems
all that's required is an exception rule to be created.
Unfortunately...

...saved as 'GMarks.xml' in my Firefox profile's
HTTPSEverywhereUserRules directory and enabled in the extension's
options, doesn't seem to work. I'm at work, so can't spend the time I
need to on it at the moment. My next step would be to run Wireshark to
see what traffic is being sent to Google Bookmarks with and without
the extension enabled, though someone else may have more time or a
better/quicker idea.
