I just downloaded GMarks 1.0.3.3, using it with Firefox 9.0.1 on
Windows Vista. Although I haven't yet done so, I intend on also
installing it on my Linux and Mac systems as well.

This is a fairly detailed review, explaining what I like and what I
don't like. If the author can take the time to read my suggestions,
it would be greatly appreciated, since that is the reason I'm writing
this messages.

My intention in installing GMarks is to replace the Bookmarks toolbar
button from the Google Toolbar. I've stopped using the Google Toolbar
because it is no longer supported, and that lack of support is leading
to various things breaking over time. I don't think Google intends on
releasing a new version, so I'm replacing it with separate add-ons to
replace the parts of the Google Toolbar that I use a lot. One of
these is the Bookmarks.

After installing GMarks, the first thing I noticed is that there is
little indication that it was installed. This is because current
releases of Firefox hide the menu bar by default. I found the GMarks
menu by tapping the Alt key. I think it would be a good idea for the
installer to auto-add something else as well - perhaps a toolbar
button or auto-load a help page on the first startup, so new users
don't have to go searching.

I used the Customize Toolbar dialog to add the GMarks sidebar button
and GMarks Bookmarks menu to my bookmarks toolbar. These icons don't
have any text in the Customize Toolbar dialog. Additionally, the one
for the Bookmarks menu appeared as the same blue-star icon as the
sidebar icon. If I drag the Bookmarks menu off of the toolbar and
back to the Customize window, it appears as other icons. I get the
impression that this item doesn't actually have an icon. This should
be fixed because it is confusing, especially for users less savvy than
myself.

In terms of actual behavior, once installed, there are only a few
small things that I would like to see changed:

1: Can the Bookmarks menu toolbar item be renamed to "GMarks" so we
know that it isn't somebody else's bookmarks menu? And when toolbars
are configured for icons-only, hide the text. Perhaps use a
distinctive icon so it doesn't look like local bookmark folders when
text is hidden.

2: There needs to be support for one- and two-button mice. This is
especially important for the Mac platform where older one-button mice
are common and Apple's newer pointing devices only support left- and
right-click, without any center/wheel-click capability. Specifically,
on the Bookmarks menu, I can right-click a folder to get the "Open In
Tabs" and "Add Bookmark Here" choices; it should also be possible to
get this with Ctrl-left-click. Similarly, I can center/wheel-click a
folder to open it in tabs - there should be a method to do this with
one button (perhaps Alt-left-click? Ctrl-Shift-left-click?)

3: It would be great if there could be a toolbar icon to quickly add/
remove bookmarks. Perhaps even integrated with the Bookmarks menu
icon - similar to how clicking the star part of the Google Toolbar
icon works. Clicking it on a page that isn't bookmarked should add
it, and clicking it on a page that is bookmarked should remove it,
after confirmation. You've already got an icon to add/edit a
bookmark, so maybe it can simply be enhanced to support removal as
well.

4: I personally think the "Manage Online" menu item (to go to Google's
bookmark webpage) should be a default option. No matter how fully-
featured GMarks is, there will always be times when it is most
convenient to use the web interface. But that's not really a bug,
since it is easy for me to add it to the menu.

But these are my only problems. Overall, I'm quite happy with GMarks
and will continue using it. My problems, above, are all minor and
should not significantly impair my ability to use it most of the time.

Thank you for a great product and I look forward to trying out future
versions.
