The point of the indirection is to get macro arguments expanded *before* substitution. Which matters only (I think) when using the # and ## cpp operators. Example: gcc -E on this file #define S1(x) prefix_##x #define S(x) S1(x) #define FOO bar S(FOO) S1(FOO) produces prefix_bar prefix_FOO > Perhaps we should use m4 for preprocessing C instead? :-) That would certainly cause some additional confusion.
