Hi,

with the GUI: File -> Save As -> Format : Gmsh mesh   and then a window appears 
that ask you which mesh format you want.

or add

Mesh.MshFileVersion = 1 ;

in your .geo file  ( http://www.geuz.org/gmsh/doc/texinfo/gmsh-full.html#SEC76 )
