you can define 2 splines, but they will not be smoothly connected
unless you choose control points adequately

yes, that's normal : gmsh's native cad modeler does not support
(yet ?) periodic surfaces.

BTW, the meshing is successful if the closed line is composed of a
spline and a line or two splines. Can you help me on this issue?
I tested this using the stable version 2.3.1 on both Windows and
Linux.
