Hi Falk, I realize this is a little outdated but since it's been useful to me time and again, perhaps you can make some use of pygmsh [1,2] as well. (It's a thing Python wrapper that generates Gmsh files. Isn't as powerful as raw Gmsh, but arguably easier to use.)
