Found that it is an ongoing problem over the years: there are around 52 changesets and about 12 tickets in the bug tracker on "duplicate". Open one of them:

Remove duplicate mesh elements

So it seems that already a lot have been done against doubles but there is not yet a universal weapon invented.
Maybe there is for this kind of duplicates something there, maybe not. One should study the whole geo tutorial line to figure out which kind of functions are already offered for it. - could be fun.
Ok -when I reread the thread, I find the there has been already found a solution to eliminate this point. Ok? By using the gui pe? aha. So there is supposed to be a script equivalent for it. .. Well, thank you very much for the conversation. (;
