Dear Martin,
I donot have any idea about the goodness/shortcomings of the two compilers however, what I have observed is that on the SGI system I could load the older versions of gromacs like 3.01/3.2 with the MIPspro cc compilers I was comfortably using gromacs till the latest version emerged, and all my other softwares are working well so I never felt any need to switch over to install/use gcc on SGI. I have gcc in my PC with Fedora core and gromacs 3.3 is installed there. Its working fine. My next attempt would be to load gcc on SGI. Do you have any idea how much space does it occupy ? ( I am hard of Disk space) . Pray for me.

My guess is you might need a few tens of MB once it's installed. Do be aware that gcc is highly modular, and you don't want to install an ADA compiler if you don't want that, for example :-) Also check around the web to see if there exist GCC binaries for your hardware and OS version.
