Actually, this is not entirely true. Gromacs has been available in Debian for a long time now, and is also available in the Ubuntu Universe repository. The current version in Debian stable is 3.3.3 and 4.0.3 in unstable; in Ubuntu 3.3.3 except in the upcoming 9.04 release 4.0.3. Also, Gromacs has been included in Fedora and Fedora EPEL since November. The current version in Fedora is 4.0.4. SuSe seems to contain Gromacs 3.3.1.
