No offense taken; different languages serve different purposes.  In this
case, I was updating a shell script, so Perl seemed like an okay choice.
Of course I was influenced by the fact that I know Perl well, and am
horrible at shell scripting.

Anyhow, if I've done what I wanted to do, nobody should have to look
at the surrounding code for more than a moment or two if they want to
update the output it generates.
