So the framebuffer matches your graphics mode but I suppose that GTK
expects a 24bpp (or 32 bpp?) buffer regardless of the video mode. At
least that would explain the result.

I think the problem is related to the alpha channel, which is used when the x-server runs on 8, 16 or 32bit color depth and the render function doesn't take care of this.
I will setup my x-server with 16bit, then I can start testing this.
