That may be because some library that libgnashbackend.so.0 depends upon, is missing.
I install the latest gnash from http://www.welcomehome.org/gnash/releases/gnash-0.7.1.tar.gz
That's very old. 0.7.2 went out a while back and is getting old; we are about to release again. I suggest you use current CVS head if you can - see gnu.org/software/gnash -> Getting the software The 0.7.1 page you found should probably now redirect to the current place we distribute from (sorry about that!)
OS is knoppix 5.1 hard disk installation.
