Your script for doing so would still be worth reporting on this list IMHO :)

distcheck currently makes the tarball, extracts it into a dir which sets as read-only afterwards; configures using all defaults except for install dir; builds; calls 'make check' installs in the install dir; calls 'make clean'; checks that everything got cleared
