I don't, really. I guess one would use multiple build dirs for testing.
In the system lib dir we'd only want release and 'dev' versions.

I and others make and make install repeatedly in the same build
directories and into the system tree, which requires a periodic
purging.
Unless anyone knows of a reason to keep multiple -cvs versions
installed or in build dirs, I'll change this to -cvs by updating to
the non-deprecated automake macros
