The problem is you have to do colorspace conversion to RGB24, and this is not a free operation. I did initial testing with VA API on Intel and NVIDIA platforms. It turns out the gain was not that much, if any. I will post the patches tomorrow if this interests anybody.
A better solution would be to do composition with OpenGL, but I didn't know much about Gnash internals yet to persue this route.
