Just for the record, in the specific I've asked rob
what was wong with checking for GIT at configure time
rather than using 'which' everytime 'make' is invoked.
Also, I've pointed out that some implementation of 'which'
return 'no <command>' when nothing is found, which breaks
his "make-time checking".
