I am incredibly skeptical of any solution that consists in doing the
same thing over and over and anticipating different results. Do you have
an explanation as to how a category 1 installation differs from a
category 2 installation, or what specifically causes it?

There are 2 drivers, one of which is broken. I don't know why the broken one gets activated sometimes, but it's going to be removed, so it won't be an issue anymore in the future.
