The simplest test I can think of is checking whether this problem is
specific to mipsel/yeeloong port, or also happens with metad i386 / amd64.
I installed i386 again with text-based installer today. I can see that
the default user is part of the netdev group:
grep netdev /etc/group -> "netdev:x:110:samgee"
