When I type my password and almost immediately C-M-F1 to switch
to another terminal, the login does not succeed; instead it seems
to make X crash. X restarts and takes control of the screen.

Wouldn't it be better to first switch to terminal 1 with C-M-F1, and
then login? If you then want X, you just have to type startx.
