Yes and no. If you're using pmon to load the kernel (rather than say grub), then it should take care of passing arguments that the kernel will take as equivalent to machtype=8.9 However, if you're using grub, I believe the arguments added by pmon will not make to the kernel, and then you have to add it yourself, unless the standard grub config already has it (I'm not sure.
