Ubuntu Reverts Video Driver Stance
Moments ago hitting the ubuntu-announce-list is word that the upcoming
7.04 "Feisty Fawn" release will not include the closed-source ATI and NVIDIA
display drivers by default. There was much controversy behind this decision
of whether to include the ATI and NVIDIA binary blobs and enable them by
default; so that its users can immediately benefit from Composite and desktop
effects. Like existing releases, the proprietary video drivers will be easily
available through their repositories, but they will NOT be activated by
default.

This mailing list also mentioned that Ubuntu will be monitoring the progress
of the Nouveau driver project. Another change in this mailing list message by
Matt Zimmerman states that with Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn the PowerPC version
will no longer be officially supported. The PowerPC release of Ubuntu 7.04
Feisty Fawn could also fall behind the other architectures in the release
schedule if testing and bug fixing is not picked up by community members.
