I don't know how to solve your problem, but this should explain why there's no "root": https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo The user that's created during installation does not automatically have root priviliges all the time. It's still necessary to use "sudo" (or "gksudo") to do anything that requires such priviliges.
