well, it turns out that his computer doesn't have an ethernet slot.
I can't remember if those USB/Ethernet modems have to be connected with
USB to work. If it has its own power supply, probably not.
No Ethernet port? Sounds pretty old. Anyway, you can get a PCI network
card for dirt cheap, so that shouldn't be a problem. Ethernet is still
your best bet.
