After the first fix attempt the European server synchronized at
around 07:00 GMT in half an hour. This made the "Hash sum mismatch"
error go away. However, because of a configuration error the European
server didn't see the top level directory and shifted everything one
level up. That means that the update software can't find files where
it expects them to be (403 message).
Right after the server was done synchronizing the configuration error
was fixed. After a few hours it started synchronizing again and the
European server's status page [1] is telling me that it hasn't
finished yet.

I don't know why the first sync took only half an hour and the
current one is taking over 7 hours. But the fact that it *is*
synchronizing is a good sign at least.
still problems...
now this is the status (http://ftp.heanet.ie/status/):
gnewsense Wed Nov 25 13:01:51 GMT 2009 Wed Nov 25
20:06:15 GMT 2009 7 hours 4 minutes 24 seconds
Then the configuration probably still isn't correct. There should be a
"gnewsense" folder in http://be.archive.gnewsense.org/
While we are working on getting this fixed you can work around this
issue by temporarily using the main server. Open Software Sources and
choose "Download from: Main server".
