Point #2: changing to another Free distro will not solve your problem, unless you are unlucky and it does solve the issue, that way you will never know what the real problem was and that will come back and bite you in the ass one day when ti comes to GNU/Linux :) Your problem is whether your card Radeon 5700 (HD 5700 ? , external/on-board ?) is supported by Xorg Open-Source driver or not. [AMD/ATI] RS880 [Radeon HD 4250] You can check the codename of your card here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ati_gpu and then check for Xorg support in FeatureMatrix: https://www.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature/ It may all seem very complicated to you at first comparing to your Windows experience where you just pop-in the Windows CD/DVD and install and then pop-in few more CDs for drivers and you are ready to use your computer.
