For about a year now I have been using this one:

A friend introduced me to it as he had one and it is great, no problems. It supports up to an 80 gig laptop hard drive although I only have a 20 gig in it.

Can anyone recommend a good manufacturer for USB to IDE external

I have two of these running for 14 months, no complaints:

They're 5.25" which I use for IDE hotswap sleds:

I also have some Speeze 3.5" of the same vintage, all aluminum, passive cooling. Those are great, but they don't make them anymore - the replacement is bigger and has an annoying blue 'neon' bar in the front. I have one which works, but I won't buy another because I don't need more dasblinkenlights on my shelf. If you like technobling and don't care about the size they're fine.
