I've found that to be generally true too. Myself, I loved reading Linus' rant <http://mail.gnome.org/archives/usability/2005-December/msg00022.html> about GNOME's file-open dialog. That single "feature" is what caused me to move to KDE years ago. When I use the GIMP today it's a royal PITA just because of that issue. I've developed the habit of opening a shell, cd'ing to the directory I want to be in, and then running "gimp &".
