Thanks for pointing out that the "filename~" file is actually the backup file. So I agree with you that it would be safe not to overriding this behavior.

For gvim its in the Edit pull down Settings menu
set bdir=.,/home/mnolin/tmp,/home/mnolin/
backupext file name extension for the backup file
set bex=~
backups are usually a good thing so I haven't bothered
to override this
behavior. Though I do get swap file already exists
messages.
