Some distros default fat, vfat, ntfs file-systems to read-only for safety, don't know if that's your case. Devices also remount r/o on error. If 'mount' reports 'ro', but no errors listed, a 'mount --options remount,rw' should work. Sometimes a specific reader doesn't like a specific card, so try another one.
