I agree, and moreover I think that this is a good general role for the
umbrella gnhlug organization! As I see it, one of the major functions or
purposes of the state-wide gnhlug should be to support the local groups in
whatever ways are possible, and especially to take advantage of
opportunities for economies of scale. I think that means the role of gnhlug
needs to be broader than just collecting and distributing goodies from
vendors. It also means that people approaching vendors need to take a
broader view of the contact than just getting some handouts.

I'd suggest that the approach probably should be to identify and cultivate
contacts and partnerships with vendors rather than simply looking for a
one-shot handout. We also need to figure out if we want to bound the scale
of the LBS or let it be whatever the market will support - we could be
asking if the vendors would be interested in supplying additional
promotional materials (i.e., handouts and/or demos), setting up a display
booth in our vendor exhibits (we were going to ask for a free-will donation
to help with promotional costs, should we establish a policy on this before
we get too far along?), or perhaps even supplying a speaker (is this a good
idea?).

There are some other related issues about the role of gnhlug, I think we
need to consider them at some time, but this may not be the time and place
for that...
