(I know I'm coming into this thread about a week late, but I was buried at
work...)

As one of the people who complained about that aborted Nashua meeting last
year, I want to refresh people's memories of what happened:

The meeting was well publicized, several weeks in advance. It was canceled
less than eight hours prior to the actual scheduled meeting, during the
business day. No one at Martha's knew anything about anything when asked (I
understand that an effort was made to notify Martha's, so this may be their
fault). A big issue was that some people did or could not read their email
during the few hours prior to the meeting, and thus never heard about the
cancellation.

This is in contrast to this "canceled" SLUG meeting, which was never
previously scheduled, publicized, or even mentioned, AFAIK.

At the time, I complained a bit (hey -- this is *me*), and offered to setup
and maintain a pager network for last-minute cancellations, should anyone be
interested. Nobody was, and the idea died a quick death.

So, in short, there was much ado about nothing. :-)

That being said, I think Paul's action in creating some meeting guidelines
is commendable, both in general and for this group, which is notoriously
disorganized, despite Jerry's near-heroic efforts encouraging us to get our
act together. ;-) (Note: I am just as guilty -- if not more so -- of
disorganization and procrastination as the next guy.)

The idea of having "Emergency Backup Persons" ready should a planned speaker
flame-out is a good one, methinks. We should probably have a list of contact
information for such things, including cell/pager/mobile.

In the spirit of taking my own medicine, I would like to volunteer myself as
a potential "Emergency Backup Person" should the event arise. I'm sure I
could pull *something* out of my a^H^H^H^H the air. I cannot promise I will
always be available at any given time, but I generally am.
