Based on the kickoff meeting, my take on IBM's SHARE conference here,
and lots of thought & discussion with various people, here's my
(emphesis on my) thoughts on LBS2001, as a starting point for
discussion:
Recommendations for Show:
1. Main emphasis on training, with a 1 - 2 day trade show associated
2. Shoot for about 300 people - we don't want to try for growth too
fast, shoot for about 1000 in 2002
3. Tracks:
3.1 Linux technical: NFS, Samba, Installing Apache, Troubleshooting
Linux, etc. Possibly get the same speakers as at the recent IBM
SHARE. Possibly work with LPI, SAIR, local colleges & training orgs
on certification track.
3.2. Linux Business: Building the Business Case, Why Open Source,
???
3.3. (possibly): Linux in Government: Using Linux in Education,
Linux at the Police Station, Linux for Non-Profits, etc
3.4 Vendor Specific training: this one, we let the vendors work ,we
would sponsor for advertisements, help to get room, but they would
run. Opportunities for vendor certification.
4. Need to market early and often. First press releases in January,
work with vendors, chambers of commerce, other shows to get
advertising out.
5. Let's involve the other local LUGS (BLU, WeLUG, Vermont LUG,
MeLUG, etc). More possible trainers to run the show.
6. Need a variety of committees:
6.1. LBS Chair (Lori). Overall in charge.
6.2. Physical Plant. Obtain facility, coordinate setup, teardown,
etc. Possibly also meals / snacks, but that may be a separate group.
Works with Publicity to build the signage for the day of the show.
Works with all of the other committees to ensure their space & room
requirements (tape, chairs, power, network, etc) are met day of show.
6.3. Speakers. Coordinate getting speakers. Obtain bios, topics,
preferably copy of presentation that can be put on the web site after
the event. Work with Publicity on advertising the speakers.
Coordinate with Physical Plant to ensure room set up correct for each
speaker. Provide assistance as needed on day of event to ensure talks
go well.
6.4. Demos. Develop & coordinate showing of demos. Work with
Publicity on advertising demos to be shown. Work with Physical plant
to ensure sufficient room for demos.
6.5. Vendors. Obtain vendor support. Coordinate with Physical Plant
on vendor space requirements. Coordinate with Publicity to ensure
they are properly credited. Work with Treasurer to ensure money from
Vendors handled.
6.6. Publicity. Coordinate all advertising & publicity. Contact of
>newspapers, magazines, web sites, radio, TV. Work with Speakers,
Demos, Vendors to ensure publicity is correct. Build press kits &
handouts for day of show. Works with Physical Plant on requirements
for day of show. Available to support Press day of show. In charge
of LBS website. May do the registration / preregistration, or that
may be a separate committee.
6.7. Sales. GNHLUG sales (t-shirts, mugs, etc).
6.8. Treasurer. Does all the money stuff.
6.9. Advisory Committee. Probably the heads of the committees, get
together to ensure everything's on track, no gotcha's, etc.
7. Need to have the show prepared 1 month in advance - this includes
all technical aspects (deadlines 1 month in advance on demos, etc).
This gives us time to practice the shows beforehand.
8. Make certain plenty of volunteers for each position.

Thought for today: That's life.
        What's life?
A magazine.
        How much does it cost?
Two-fifty.
        I only have a dollar.
That's life.
